METROPOP!
Interview with Gregg Cohen of THE
FURY
- Don Sill
The Fury, a local 5-piece metal band hailing from
Syosset, have been taking their brand of heavy metal to the bars and earning
their bones playing the smoky, dimly lit stages at the wee hours of the morning.
Their music utilizes complex guitar and bass lines as well as vocal harmonies
to create what they call, "Metropop." They are confident that their sound will
catch on and they will soon monopolize not only the local circuit, but the rest
of the world as well. This band of 21 year olds; (Jared Morgenstern - Vocals
Justin Starr - Lead Guitar David Starr - Lead Guitar Evan Schyer - Drums- Gregg
Cohen - Bass); began 2 1/2 years ago as a straight-forward heavy metal band,
and as they grew both physically and mentally as musicians they progressed and
infused more melody into their sound. "Basically the band has gone through a
period of musical Darwinism," says bassist Gregg Cohen. For now, the band can
be seen at a local club/bar near you and also look out for the release of thier
7-song EP on Indy label ETP Records.

In your own words, how would you describe your overall sound?
COHEN: Metropop - Metal, Rock, Pop
How do you come up with the music and the lyrics?
COHEN: A member of the band will either introduce
a new riff or vocal line and one or two of us will work on it, kind of hash
it out...and soon after we bring it to the rest of the band and everyone adds
their parts and it grows from there
What inspires your music?
COHEN: We all have our inspirations whether it
be Bach, Bon Jovi, being dumped by a girl, or getting laid... The usual..
What is your opinion about the current Long Island music scene?
COHEN: It boggles the mind how we don't own it.
It is simply a matter of time before the right people hear our music... Then
watch the fuck out
How can we improve the local rock scene?
COHEN: You gotta get more people out to shows,
the word has got to get out about the bands.
Where do you think you guys fit in among the local music circuit?
COHEN: I do not think we define ourselves by the
music around us...we are hoping to see all different types of music get opportunities
to showcase themselves...too many bands out there sound like the same old crap...
What separates your band from other rock acts on the local scene right now?
COHEN: Our energy on stage, and our musicality...
What other local bands do you think rock?
COHEN: Broken, Stone Stroller, Iridesense fuckin
rocks, just to name a few
Why should someone go out and see you guys live?
COHEN: We have the best stage show on Long Island,
and our music is as good (or better) as anyone else's...
What can we expect to see at your live performance?
COHEN: Pure energy, people having fun, rock and
roll at its finest
Any crazy club stories?
COHEN: We played a gig on my 21st birthday, and
every time my name was said I had to take a shot...after 10, 15, or whatever...I
could hardly stand up, let alone play.. But, we finished the show... I woke
up all hungover and shit, but it was a good birthday..
Any rituals before you go onstage?
COHEN: Jared throws up, I get drunk, Justin tunes
all the guitars, Dave is a D**k, and Shyer takes his shoes off
Any talks from labels or anything brewing?
COHEN: There are always things on the table, some
smaller than others. We have had some Indy label interest but unfortunately
could not capitalize on any of them seeing as though we are all currently enrolled
in college. We are going to finish getting our degrees before we commit to anything
serious.
What are your ultimate goals?
COHEN: World domination... If that fails we will
settle for some p***y, or HUGE COMMERCIAL SUCCESS... A record deal would be
nice too..
