The Farmingdale based Twelfth Tide has been making waves within the
Long Island club circuit within the past 3 years playing everywhere from
The Dublin Pub to The Downtown and are making a name for themselves all
over the Island. The band who includes (Katelin Gallagher -lead singer, rhythm
guitar; Anthony Spucces-Drummer; Shane Psaltis-Bass & Joe Palmieri- Lead
guitar) have
been busting their butts and are holding strong for the ultimate payoff,
but for now they're just gonna keep on jamming.
Although Twelfth Tide's success is largely due to their catchy upbeat
pop-rock, it is their beautiful 22 year-old singer, Katelin Gallagher
who stands out as a genuine talent. As a child prodigy, she began playing
guitar at age 6 and eventually began to write her own songs. her natural
stage presence gives off an alluring vibe to the audience that seems to
suck them right into her performance.
Be sure to check out Twelfth Tide live next time they're in your
neighborhood.
What inspired you to name the band Twelfth Tide?
Kate: January 6th which is the 12th day
after Christmas is known as the
Twelfth Day, and also considered a season of Epiphany. Twelfth Tide
is another variation of that name. Celebrating the last high tide and
full moon of the year. It's Biblical really, but for us it just symbolizes endings,
new beginnings and miracles.
In your own words, how would you describe your overall sound?
Kate: We are a rock band with a pop edge.
Our songs are catchy and we rock out in many of them but the chorus' are almost always in major "happy"
chords.
What inspires your music?
Kate: More often than not it's love,
or the lack of love, or the loss of
love. I find it harder to write songs when I am happy and fully content
with things. Writing music and creating songs is a huge part of the way
I deal with hardships.
What is your opinion about the current Long Island music scene?
Kate:It's totally kick ass. It used to
be nearly impossible to find a place that
would book an original band any night of the week on LI, much less
a weekend night. Places like The Dublin Pub, Mulcahy's, The Vanderbilt and especially
the Downtown are changing that. There are so many great bands that
are based
in Long Island and unfortunately, LI got such a reputation for catering
to cover bands only. But there is a huge audience on LI for original
music. More than we are given credit for.
How can we improve the local rock scene?
Kate:I think that there needs to be greater
access for the younger kids to these
bands. In high school, music is so much a part of your life. It's
what gets
you through the bus ride in the morning and what shuts out the sound
of your mother screaming at you when you get home. 16-20 year olds are a HUGE
audience and it would be great to be able to do shows where these
kids could come down and check it out.
What other local bands do you think rock?
Kate:Sprout, Sound, Ucada, Iridesense,
Status Joe, Deep Banana Black Out
Why should someone go out and see you guys live?
Kate:
Our shows rock. We get the crowd involved and our music is
very listener friendly. We know what we need from the sound guy to sound good and
we make sure that nothing is too loud or too in your face. We get messages
on our website from fans that say how nice it is to finally be able to hear
the lyrics to a song.
What can we expect to see at your live performance?
Kate:A band that is having a great time
and loving being on stage and playing for the crowd. We have a good following and it's fun for us to interact
with the crowd. We put on a good show, because when we are on stage, as much
as it is about the music, we are also very aware that we are performing for
people.
Any rituals before you go onstage?
Kate:We usually say a prayer, wish each
other good luck, and just start to have fun.
What's next?
Kate:More shows, demo work.
